Very durable and cute educational toy
I bought this clock in 2013, when my son was 1.5 years (now he is 4). The clock has survived the pass of time incredibly well, as most of my other Melissa & Doug toys I own (like for example Melissa & Doug Wooden Bear Family Dress-Up Puzzle , which we love).
The clock is made of quality wood that it is solid and durable, with a very good finishing in both the cut and the paint. The shapes for the numbers are all unique, and it is not possible to misplace them. The Hour/Minute dials can move around so you can ask your child the time. Once you remove the shapes, the "slot" has the same color and the number written on it, so it is very easy to recognize where to put it. This is ok for small kids, but I think it takes away the challenge from older ones.
Also, this clock does not really stand upright; it mostly lays in the ground with at a 15 degree angle. I was hoping to put the clock standing when not in use, but if I do this, the shapes are in great danger to fall anytime it gets shaken. It would have been nice to have some magnetos inside the wooden pieces and in the body of the clock, so the pieces would "stick", but unfortunately this clock does not have them.
Even with this one or two flaws, I find this is an amazing educational toy that my son enjoyed mostly from is 2 to 3 years old (after which he slowly abandon it). And after all he played with it, I cannot even find an scratch!
Bonus detail: did you realize that 4=square, 5=pentagon, 6=hexagon and 8=octagon? The designers did have the good sense to match these common shapes with the number showing their number of sizes!
3.5 year old loves this
Our son was immediately excited and intrigued by this clock. It has a lot of different features, including time, numbers, shapes, and colors. We have a ways to go on telling time still but that’s just because I had never thought about how to teach a young mind how to tell time in such a digital world. This toy makes it fun and easier to talk about together!
Manufacturing Quality as it’s for a Toddler
This toddler wood clock is perfect tool for teaching one’s child about time. It is well constructed from wood and the finish is perfectly smooth with no chance of splinters. This was my second order for this clock because the first one had to be returned due to damages it incurred during shipping. The reordered clock received today was perfect! I thank the manufacturer and designers for coming up with these excellent child teaching toys /tools.
Learning on SO many levels with one simple toy
Our little one just lights up when she sees this. At 18 months, she has mastered putting the pieces in the proper places. We are learning the names of the shapes and their colors. Her 8-year-old sister uses it to practice telling time and to name the shapes and their attributes (how many sets of parallel and congruent sides). This truly grows with the kiddo. As a retiring (in three more days) math teacher, I highly recommend this toy. Making learning fun and rewarding - it doesn't get any better than this!
Great Value as a Shape-Sorter and Introduction to Other Mathematical Skills
I bought this clock primarily for the shape-sorting aspect it offers. 12 unique shapes to to be fitted into their respective holes on the board. I feel it is a good value for the money in providing my 14 month old a broad range of shapes and colors from which to enhance her spatial skills. As she grows, she will also be able to engage her brain in number sense, and eventually telling time.
Again, the skills offered with this product are a strong value for the investment. It's a great addition to the playroom, classroom, or homeschool room.
My only criticism of the Melissa and Doug brand, is that once you get accustomed to the thicker, higher quality of brands like Janod, Hape, Haba, or even the Alex line of wooden toys, you can clearly tell the craftsmanship is not on the same level. This product is much thinner, and not sanded to the same softness as toys by the other brands.
Dollar for dollar, with all the skills this particular toy offers I still highly recommend it as a 5-star purchase; but overall, brand for brand, I don't feel that Melissa and Doug offers toys that will stand the test of time as well as some of the other manufacturers on the market.
It's amazing. He knows what a trapezoid is
My grandson who is 2 1/2 years old. He first learned all his letters that his colors and his numbers. Then he got hooked on shapes. So I seen this clock with all it's shapes. He lives in Arizona and I live in New Jersey. So my son Face Timed me and was telling me how that's the only toy he plays with out of all the toy's got for Christmas which was a lot considering he has a lot of ants in uncles. He told me he want to bed with the shape clock and my son hide it in his room when he fell asleep. As I was Face Timing with my son Christmas morning my grandson walk downstairs with the clock and shapes and we both started laughing because he found it and he wasn't coming down without it. There's some shapes in there that I don't even know what they're called and he knows them. It's amazing. He knows what a trapezoid is. To be honest I'm 56 years old and I did not know that.. Anyhow he loves it.
What’s not to love
I taught my kids how to tell time with this. It’s just perfect for learning, and it’s a puzzle! Of all the (way too many) toys my kids have, all the M&D are constantly the best! I just bought this one for a friend, but my daughter’s has to be 5 or 6 years old now, and as good as new. The M&D wooden toys are the ones that will be saved for grandkids because I know they are going to last.
